DEAN LARSON
After receiving his BS in Industrial Management from Purdue University, Dean was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and retired as a Captain in 1992 after thirty years of active and reserve service as a Special Operations and Surface Warfare Officer. He received a Master's degree in Communications Management from the Naval Postgraduate School and Ph.D. in Instructional Research and Design from Purdue.
Dean was the Department Manager, Safety and Industrial Hygiene, U. S. Steel Gary Works before he retired in 2003. Before returning to U.S. Steel in 1995 to assume that position, he worked for Argonne National Laboratory as Environment, Safety and Health Training Manager. Prior to joining Argonne, Dean worked for U.S. Steel Corporation in Gary, Indiana, in management of environment, safety and health programs for the Coke and Chemicals operations.
He serves on the National Fire Protection (NFPA) Technical Committee on Emergency Management and Business Continuity, author of NFPA 1600 Standard on Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity and U.S. Technical Advisory Group Chair and Head of Delegation for the ISO Technical Committee 223 on Societal Security. He initiated the Emergency Management Certificate Program and teaches courses in Emergency Management and Homeland Security for Purdue University Calumet.
Dean serves as a Commissioner on the Indiana Emergency Response Commission and on the Certified Emergency Manager (CEM©) Commission, and holds certifications as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), and Certified Professional Technologist (CPT), with additional qualifications in hazardous materials and explosive safety.
Dr. Larson is President of Larson Performance Consulting and teaches as a Limited Term Lecturer in Construction Science and Organizational Leadership at Purdue University Calumet. He expects to graduate with a Master's in History from Purdue Calumet in December.
Captain Larson represents the U.S. Naval Academy as an Information Officer.
